North Las Vegas uncle sentenced to prison for killing 2-year-old niece

The man who killed his two-year-old niece might face up to 25 years in prison as part of a plea agreement.

In April 2024, Leo’oolo Tevaseu, 23, told police that he kept his palm over the child’s face for around 30 seconds because she “wouldn’t stop crying,” according to papers.

The child was later identified by the Clark County Coroner’s Office as Fofogafeta Maluia Fields.

Tevaseu agreed in January to plead guilty to second-degree murder and serve a sentence ranging from 10 to 25 years. On Thursday, Clark County District Court Judge Tierra Jones sentenced Tevaseu to the conditions of the agreement.

According to the arrest report, Tevaseu told officers that he was babysitting his sister’s children while she was at work. When police came, they found two children in the house.

Tevaseu claimed that he was carrying Fields and that she refused to stop sobbing, so he struck her in the face before striking her with a pillow, according to records. According to the claim, he then lifted her up and cradled her like a baby for “about 30 seconds,” covering her mouth with his palm.

Tevaseu will be eligible for parole in 2034, after crediting time served in jail while awaiting sentencing.
