A homeless man who broke into a Villager’s home and attempted to steal her purse is going to state prison.
Craig Steven Johnson, 53, has been sentenced to three years in prison by the Florida Department of Corrections for the horrible incident that occurred on The Villages’ Historic Side this past August.
According to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department, the 78-year-old woman was at her house at 3 p.m. when Johnson knocked on her door and forced his way inside. Once inside, he dropped the woman’s purse on a table and began searching for her car keys. The woman instantly grabbed her purse, starting a tug-of-war between herself and Johnson. She successfully struggled for her purse and pushed the man away from her front door.
She gave officers a description of Johnson, including the fact that he had blood running down his face, probably from a previous injury.
Officers searched the immediate neighborhood and discovered the Johnson near a residence on St. Andrews Boulevard.
According to the report, Johnson went to the woman’s home and asked to use her phone or receive a ride. The Michigan native, who measures 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs 200 pounds, confesses to pushing his way into her home and grabbing her pocketbook. He didn’t know the woman.
