CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — A student at Heights High School died Thursday after experiencing a medical emergency during an athletic practice, Superintendent Liz Kirby confirmed, leaving the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District in mourning.
“We are not sharing the student’s name or further details at this time in order to respect the family’s privacy,” she said in a statement sent to cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer Saturday afternoon. “Right now, we are focused on ensuring that our students and staff have the tools and supports they need to grieve and heal.”
District social workers, counselors and administrators at Heights High School made themselves available to students on Friday and will remain accessible in the days and weeks ahead, Kirby said.
“We are incredibly grateful to the greater Heights community for their outpouring of kindness,” she said in the statement. “We continue to keep the student’s loved ones in our thoughts during this unimaginably difficult time.”
Officials did not release details about the type of athletic practice or the nature of the medical emergency. It also remains unclear whether first responders were called to assist.
