13-Year-Old Taken Into Custody After Threats Target Shaker Heights Middle School

The Shaker Heights Police Department and Shaker Heights City School District announced Saturday that authorities took a 13-year-old boy from Cleveland into custody in connection with threats of violence.

Police said the threats were reported to Shaker Heights Middle School on Thursday after dismissal and again Friday morning around 8:58 a.m.

These threats triggered an immediate and comprehensive response from officers and school officials, including issuing a shelter-in-place order.

Officials confirmed that no weapons or suspicious devices were found on school grounds, and all students and staff were safely accounted for.

Following a full investigation, officers identified the individual responsible for making the calls and determined that the suspect was not a student.

Authorities also confirmed the Cleveland boy was never physically present at the school before taking him into custody.

The Cuyahoga County Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office is currently reviewing potential criminal charges.

We are grateful to the Shaker Heights Police Department for their swift and thorough work in identifying and apprehending the individual. Their partnership and presence helped ensure the safety of our students and staff. For more information, please see the SHPD’s press release.

At this time, there is no ongoing threat to our schools. The District will continue to work closely with law enforcement and maintain appropriate safety measures.

We understand that events like this can be unsettling, particularly for students. Middle School counselors remain available to support any students who may be experiencing anxiety or have questions. We encourage families to check in with their children and provide reassurance.
