Former bartender sentenced to 40 year in prison for Bay County crash

A Bay County woman will serve at least 40 years in prison after killing two Genesee County men in a drunk driving crash.

According to court documents, Ashley Satkowiak, 34, pleaded no contest in March to the following three charges:

  • Two counts of operating a motor vehicle with a high blood-alcohol content causing death with a prior conviction.
  • One count of operating a motor vehicle with a high blood-alcohol content causing serious with a prior conviction.

On Monday, Bay County Circuit Court Judge Jessie Scott Wood sentenced Satkowiak to 20 to 40 years in jail for one crime and 20 to 40 years for the other.

Wood ordered that the sentences be served consecutively, which means Satkowiak would spend at least 40 years in jail before being eligible for release.

According to police, Satkowiak left the bar where she worked in Bay County in March 2024, drove south on I-75’s northbound lanes, and collided with another vehicle near Salzburg Road in Monitor Township.

The crash killed 39-year-old Ronald Wells of Flint and 33-year-old Brandon Edwards of Davison. Another passenger in their vehicle had serious injuries but survived. Satkowiak also suffered serious injuries.

According to court records, Satkowiak’s blood alcohol level was 0.189 at the time of the crash. That is more than double the legal limit of 0.08 and is considered extremely intoxicated under Michigan law.

She is also a three-time habitual offender.
