A 2-year-old boy who had been missing since his mother was shot dead in a northwest alley has been recovered uninjured, according to D.C. police. The MPD canceled an AMBER Alert and apprehended a suspect in the case.
Authorities identified the child as Royce Hawkins, who was last seen with his mother at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the 500 block of Kenyon Street NW.
At 10:52 p.m., officers responded to the 600 block of Kenyon Street, where they discovered a lady with gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Police have since identified the woman as Jamillah Gales, a 25-year-old with no fixed residence.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, investigators established that the decedent was with her 2-year-old child shortly before being shot. MPD issued an AMBER Alert for the woman early Wednesday.
The child was found unharmed in a home near the scene of the crime soon before 11 a.m., and the AMBER Alert was canceled, MPD said. MPD noted that the suspect and another adult male were inside the house where the child was discovered.
MPD confirmed that a suspect has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
The suspect’s identify has not yet been revealed.
