Belle Vernon student apprehended in connection with online threat

The Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office stated Wednesday that a 15-year-old girl was apprehended in connection with an internet threat mentioning a school shooting in the Belle Vernon Area School District.

A person in Minnesota who was playing online video games with the girl complained to Rostraver police last week that she threatened violence during their gaming session, according to Melanie Jones, spokesman for the district attorney’s office.

Police officers searched the girl’s house and computer gadgets. It was unclear whether they discovered anything relevant.

Charges for terroristic threats and simple assault will be filed in juvenile court. The girl goes to school in the district.

In a statement, District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli and Rostraver authorities Chief Scott Sokol praised the online gamer for taking the threat seriously and calling authorities.
