Missing Tigard teen, 14, discovered dead in Portland

A Tigard teen who had been missing since March was discovered dead in Portland on Monday from what authorities believe was a fentanyl overdose.

Chayton Owings, 14, went missing on March 19.

According to a news release issued Thursday, the teenager’s body was discovered on the Eastbank Esplanade near Southeast Salmon Street.

“This is a heartbreaking outcome, especially given the victim’s age,” Portland Police Chief Bob Day said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones who are experiencing an unspeakable loss. This instance highlights the persistent and very real dangers presented by illicit narcotics in our community, especially among young people.”

Police added that while evidence at the site led them to believe that death was caused by a fentanyl overdose, the medical examiner will make the final conclusion of the cause and manner of death.
