Gainesville shooting suspect escapes after police chase in Volusia County

Authorities are searching for a man accused of fatally shooting a woman in Gainesville on Tuesday night before leading officers on a vehicle chase.

According to the Gainesville Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire at the Creeks Edge Condos on Northwest 23rd Boulevard shortly before 10 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a 23-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators identified 31-year-old Xavion Perry as the suspect. Police say he fled the area immediately after the shooting.

Around 11:30 p.m., officers in Daytona Beach spotted Perry’s vehicle and began a pursuit. Deputies with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office later joined the chase.

During the pursuit, Perry abandoned the vehicle and ran onto a pier before jumping down onto the beach. Officers then lost sight of him.
