A 31-year-old Michigan woman faces up to five years in prison after her newborn son’s horribly decomposed body was discovered in a dumpster earlier this month.
Daysiana Powell was arrested on July 10 and arraigned two days later on charges of concealing a death.
According to police accounts, authorities found the infant’s death on July 8. The newborn was wrapped in a blanket and placed in a tote bag before being discarded in the dumpster. After conducting an initial inquiry, investigators recognized Powell as the child’s mother. Investigators claim Powell failed to alert emergency services or law enforcement at any stage throughout the infant’s death.
Family members expressed astonishment and anguish after the discovery and Powell’s subsequent arrest. In an interview with WXYZ, relatives said they were completely unaware of the situation until the police intervened and that they would have stepped in to help if they had known.
“We would have helped her if she had asked,” family members told reporters.
According to records, Powell was freed from detention after posting a $50,000 personal bond. She is due to return to court on July 21 for a probable cause conference, followed by a preliminary examination hearing on July 28 to decide whether the case has enough evidence to continue to trial.
