A 99-year-old San Diego woman is remembered as a valued neighbor after being crushed and killed by an SUV on her morning walk.
Brenda Washington noticed her 99-year-old neighbor going on a walk around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, a common sight in San Diego’s College Area neighborhood.
“I believe she goes for the same walk almost every day. “It’s probably what kept her young at heart,” Washington explained.
About an hour later, Washington heard sirens and learned the tragic news that her neighbor had died.
“Honestly, I’m devastated. It’s quite upsetting, and it hits you more harder when you see them that morning,” she explained.
According to San Diego police, the 99-year-old woman was wandering several houses away from her home when she was struck by a Chevrolet Equinox. She was brought to the hospital and died.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, neighbors have left flowers on the victim’s doorway. Washington characterized the 99-year-old as a pillar in the community.
“My son would go to school in the morning, see her, and say hello to her. “And just watching her do her thing,” she explained.
Washington believes that her neighbor’s death may have been prevented. While authorities have not revealed what caused the crash, she believes traffic safety is a constant worry on the area.
“Right now, my spouse and I are saying, ‘Slow down!’ It’s a blind curve. “You can’t see what’s right around it, and people are constantly racing past,” Washington remarked.
She is demanding for speed bumps and speed restriction signs to be installed in the area.
“I just think it’s terrible.” Washington stated, “I’m 99 years old and I walk every day, and that’s how it happens.”
Police say the driver remained on the scene. No arrests have been made, and the inquiry continues.
