A Venezuelan migrant has been ordered arrested after prosecutors accused him of dragging a Chicago police officer with a car during a traffic stop on the South Side, then biting and hitting policemen and threatening to kill one of them.
Jose Yorwin Marquez, 22, faces two counts of aggravated violence against a peace officer, two counts of refusing or obstructing a peace officer, and other traffic infractions, including driving without a driver’s license.
According to a detention petition, Chicago police stopped Marquez around 10:30 p.m. on July 9 in the 9700 block of South Princeton Avenue for minor traffic offenses, including driving without a functioning headlight.
Prosecutors said Marquez originally got out of his 2008 Ford Focus, but then pulled away from officers, jumped back into it, and put it in drive. Prosecutors claim Marquez slammed one officer to the ground and pulled another as he attempted to drive away. But he did not go far. His Ford Fusion ended up in a ditch, according to the CPD report.
According to the report, cops struggled to apprehend him on the scene of the crash. During the arrest, Marquez allegedly told one officer, “You’re gonna die, bro!” before biting his left forearm and assaulting him and another officer.
According to the detention petition, prosecutors stated that the cops escaped serious injury “due to luck” rather than a lack of effort by Marquez. Judge James Costello approved the state’s request to detain Marquez pending trial.
