A 19-year-old West Allegheny High School graduate is in critical condition after being run over by a pickup truck at a field party in Burgettstown over the weekend.
Ayla Reynolds was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital early Saturday morning after being struck during a gathering in the woods off Creek Road, according to her grandmother, Rebecca.
Doctors are fighting to save Reynolds’ leg, but her grandmother believes it will need to be amputated below the knee.
“She’s not doing well,” Rebecca explained. “She’s still in serious condition and on a ventilator. They’re working so hard to save the leg, but I don’t think they can.”
Rebecca stated that Reynolds was one of three persons killed when a pickup vehicle lost control while driving passengers up a steep slope to the celebration. She recognized the driver as Reynolds’ ex-boyfriend.
According to Rebecca, Reynolds was pulled below the truck and sustained the most serious injuries. Friends and the driver loaded her into the truck and drove her to Weirton Medical Center, fearing that an ambulance would take too long to reach the distant area. She was then airlifted to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Rebecca stated that Reynolds suffered many spine fractures, a broken pelvis, spleen damage, internal hemorrhage, and serious limb injuries. She stated that the other two people who were struck had minor injuries.
The tragedy occurred just days after Reynolds received good news concerning a long struggle with her kidney.
“She just got the all-clear last Wednesday,” Rebecca added, revealing that her granddaughter has endured several surgery in previous years.
Despite the circumstances, Rebecca stated that she has decided to forgive the young driver.
“I don’t detest him. “I forgive him,” she replied. “He is a young kid. I met with him yesterday night. “We talked and hugged.”
Rebecca stated that the family is asking for continued prayers as Reynolds remains in the hospital.
