A man from Canton pled guilty to buying guns from Northeast Ohio to sell in Greece.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Dan Aaron Polster accepted George Manuselis’ guilty plea to smuggling goods out of the United States, according to a news release from the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.
According to court documents dated April 2022, the gun found in Greece was originally purchased from a licensed gun dealer in Canton.
According to federal authorities, the buyer was identified as Manuselis, an 80-year-old dual citizen of the United States and Greece.
According to court documents, other firearms acquired by Manuselis were seized in Greece.
Manuselis admitted in court that he was smuggling the guns into Greece by concealing them in his suitcase.
According to court documents, the same day Manuselis signed and acknowledged a warning letter regarding the legal restriction against straw purchasing, investigators learned he was in the process of acquiring another firearm and had a flight scheduled for later that evening.
According to the news announcement, Manuselis was apprehended and detained at John F. Kennedy International Airport prior to boarding an aircraft to Athens.
Manuselis is due to be sentenced on November 10 and faces up to ten years in prison, according to the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.
As part of his guilty plea, Manuselis agreed to surrender all of the firearms, which included five pistols and around 940 rounds of ammunition.
The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio stated that the punishment will be determined by a federal district court judge after taking into account the US Sentencing Guidelines and other circumstances.
