Columbia Police say a random carjacking led to a crash near the State House Monday morning after the victim escaped from her vehicle.
Just after 8 a.m. on Monday, cops went to an accident at Sumter and Gervais streets.
At first, investigators assumed they were merely dealing with a crash.
But minutes after, a woman reported being carjacked, prompting authorities to link the two incidents.
Police believe the woman was arbitrarily targeted inside a downtown parking garage. Investigators say the suspect approached her, pretended to have a weapon, and drove away in her car while she was still inside.
Police said the victim, who was eventually able to exit the vehicle, was shaken but is expected to be fine.
The suspect continued driving before colliding with another vehicle near Sumter and Gervais streets. One vehicle was sent through a crossing and onto the State House grounds.
According to investigators, the suspect is still in the hospital, receiving treatment. Police have not provided any information on the other driver’s condition.
After the suspect is released, police plan to prosecute him for carjacking and kidnapping.
