A 28-year-old man will serve 18 months on probation for a shooting that killed one person.
On Wednesday, Aug. 5, Adonis Sweatt was sentenced to 325 days in jail, with credit for 325 days served, and 18 months probation by Washtenaw County Trial Court Judge Patrick Conlin, according to court records.
Sweatt pled no contest in June to one count of carrying a concealed weapon in connection with the shooting death of DaJon Ryans, 25.
Sweatt was one of two guys previously accused of open murder in this case. He was scheduled to stand trial on three weapons-related offenses prior to his plea.
Devonte Owens, 31, was sent to trial on three weapons-related offenses, including shooting a gun from a vehicle that resulted in death. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 19.
Ryans, of Ypsilanti, was fatally shot on July 11, 2025, at Ecorse Road and Towner Street.
Sweatt and Ryans had an argument at a local restaurant before the shooting, according to Andrew Childers, Washtenaw County’s assistant prosecuting attorney.
Sweatt was in the vehicle when Owens reportedly shot and murdered Ryans, although Andrew Childers claims Sweatt did not discharge a gun.
“Obviously, if Mr. Sweatt was involved and actually shot, we would be in a different situation,” he stated during a February hearing. “We’re not.”
If convicted, Owens may face life in jail.
Unlike an open murder charge, a jury does not need to determine intent to kill while deciding on a charge of discharge from a vehicle resulting in death.
The provision allows a defendant to allege that they were acting in self-defense.
Ryans was born and reared in Ypsilanti’s West Willow neighborhood, and he has four children, according to sister Paris Knight. He was a “loving, wild child” who was loyal to his family, according to a GoFundMe page set up for his family.
