A Miami man is charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide in connection with an April Flagler Street incident in which police say he was intoxicated, high, and driving at speeds exceeding 80 mph.
On Monday, police arrested Maykel Mulet Sanchez, 28, at his house in the Grapeland Heights community.
According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department, the crash occurred shortly after 5:45 p.m. on April 18 in the 6000 block of West Flagler Street, in the city’s Flagami area.
According to police, Mulet was traveling at 83 mph one second before colliding with another driver making a right turn from Northwest 60th Avenue.
According to the MPD report, Mulet impacted the other driver, who was not identified, at an angle after attempting a “evasive maneuver by steering to the left.”
Police reported that Mulet drove “onto the sidewalk, thru bushes and ultimately collided with the wall of an apartment complex.”
The second motorist was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center and later pronounced dead. According to the report, they took Mulet to the same hospital with a potential fractured jaw and observed he smelled of alcohol.
A toxicological test conducted in May revealed that his blood alcohol content was 0.11%, which was beyond the legal limit, and that he had marijuana in his system, according to the report.
According to authorities, Mulet asserted his right to remain quiet after being taken into jail on Monday.
Mulet was being held on a $20,000 bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Tuesday morning. If he posts bond, he will be placed on house arrest.
