A man was shot and killed after allegedly pulling out a gun and shooting at an officer on Jacksonville’s Westside on Tuesday afternoon.
Around 3:30 p.m., the officer sent a “shots fired” call over his radio, according to Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Chief of Investigations Mike Paul.
JSO previously stated that stop stations are locations in the community that provide officers with “a secure space to take a quick break before heading back out to protect and serve the community” and “are not open to the public.”
According to Paul, the officer was seated in his parked car. A man, subsequently identified as Christopher Ford, 45, approached the officer’s vehicle.
Paul described Ford’s meeting with the police as a brief exchange. During this point, Ford took out a revolver and began walking backward, Paul added.
According to Paul, the police pulled his revolver, and the suspect fired his firearm, missing the officer and hitting the stop station.
The officer fired his firearm, striking Ford, who was taken into custody and assisted by the police.
Ford was brought to UF Health Jacksonville and pronounced deceased.
According to Paul, Ford was detained under Florida’s Baker Act in February and has no local criminal history.
Paul stated that the JSO Cold Case Unit will continue to investigate the shooting. The officer activated his body-worn camera, but because the interaction was so brief, it may not have captured the entire event, Paul explained.
This is the officer’s second officer-involved shooting, and he cannot be identified at this time due to Marsy’s Law, Paul stated.
The officer will be placed on administrative leave, which is regular JSO policy.
Paul stated that this is the 14th officer-involved shooting for JSO this year.
