Two people were sentenced for their part in concealing the 2024 murder of a Navajo man in Arizona, officials announced.
Marlin Leon Nez, 45, and Megan Ashley Yarber, 36, were sentenced to time served after spending more than 16 months in jail, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.
Nez and Yarber had already pled guilty to misprision of felony.
In addition to the prison sentence, they were ordered to compensate the victim’s family for the expenses expended while looking for him.
On July 11, 2024, a Navajo man named Wendell Draper shot and killed the victim inside Nez’s home. According to court filings, Nez helped Draper wrap the victim’s body and place it in the victim’s vehicle.
Draper then drove to a distant area and buried the victim’s body before driving somewhere and burning the automobile. Yarber then picked him up and drove him back to Nez’s home.
Nez and Yarber did not inform authorities about the murder.
Following the murder, the victim’s family reported him missing and searched for weeks until his body was discovered and returned to them.
Draper was shot and died after reportedly pointing a gun at police officers who were attempting to capture him.
