A 22-year-old man was apprehended in downtown Boston on Friday night, days after police said he knocked over an officer while swerving through a crowd of pedestrians.
Angel Gonzalez of Dorchester was arrested on a warrant charging him with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, fleeing the scene of a crash resulting in personal harm, and failing to stop for police. He’s scheduled to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Monday.
Around 8:45 p.m. Friday, an officer waiting at a red light at Stuart and Washington streets noticed a car speeding in the opposite direction, Boston police said in a statement. The officer discovered that the driver, later identified as Gonzalez, had a warrant for his arrest and pulled him over.
Officers handcuffed Gonzalez after determining that he was the registered owner of the vehicle, according to police.
The allegations against Gonzalez stem from an incident that occurred around 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday, according to police. That day, an officer was conducting a walk-and-talk near Franklin Street in Downtown Crossing, which is only for pedestrians and emergency vehicles.
The officer witnessed a moped swerving through a gathering of pedestrians in an attempt to get onto Washington Street. As the officer approached the scooter, the rider accelerated and knocked him over, according to authorities.
The cop was checked on the spot but denied medical care.
