A 34-year-old Florida City man is facing charges after allegedly assaulting a person he loaned money to, according to investigators.
The incident happened on Thursday, August 6, outside of Sedano’s Supermarket, which is located at 950 E. Fourth Ave. in Hialeah.
According to the Hialeah Police Department, the defendant, Carlos Alvarez, had loaned the victim $4,000 some days before in order for him to buy a car.
Then, on August 6, authorities said Alvarez called the victim and requested that they meet outside the grocery.
According to officials, the two initially conversed, but the victim eventually began a video call with his girlfriend. During the call, police said Alvarez returned to his car and got a revolver, then returned to the victim and struck him in the face with it.
According to an arrest report, Alvarez shot the man twice as he tried to flee.
According to the complaint, following the gunshot, Alvarez fled the area and called the victim, who had retreated into the supermarket, ordering him not to call the police.
Authorities stated the victim waited briefly before leaving the supermarket, at which point Alvarez returned, left his vehicle, approached the victim, and began striking him before departing the area again.
Police stated neither Alvarez nor the victim were still present when officers arrived. The victim did not report the event until a week later, on August 13, at the Hialeah Police Department’s main station, situated at 5555 E. Eighth Ave.
According to an arrest report, investigators retrieved surveillance video from the scene of the event, which confirmed the victim’s sworn statement.
Alvarez was apprehended at his house on Tuesday by members of the Houston Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit.
According to jail records, he is now charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
As of Wednesday morning, Alvarez was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond of “to be set.”
