An 11-year-old girl in Oklahoma has been arrested after allegedly shooting and killing her 15-year-old brother, authorities in the Sooner State have confirmed. The Edmond Police Department was dispatched on Wednesday, September 9, to react to a gunshot at a property in Oklahoma.
The shooting occurred at a residence on Lapwing Road in Edmond, a suburb in the northern part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. When cops arrived at the home, they discovered the teenage boy had died.
According to authorities, “at least one other person was present at the time of the incident,” before announcing an arrest in a press release. Just before 1 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, investigators apprehended the victim’s 11-year-old sister and took her to a juvenile detention facility, where she was charged with second-degree murder, according to law officials.
Authorities described the “heartbreaking situation” and stated that no further identifying information would be provided due to the involvement of adolescents. The Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office issued a social media statement acknowledging the numerous questions surrounding the unfortunate case. Oklahoma law restricts the amount of information that can be shared because it concerns a juvenile. Having stated that, we cannot confirm or reject any charges relating to this matter at this time.
According to NBC affiliate KFOR in Oklahoma City, the kid died from a single gunshot wound, and the siblings were allegedly alone at the time.
According to Eyewitness News, the mother, who was not there during the incident, reported to detectives that her daughter informed her that someone had shot her son. According to Public Information Officer Emily Ward, she was the only other person in the house at the time. It’s particularly devastating, given the ages involved. Our prayers are with the family and everyone affected by this terrible incident.”
A neighbor familiar with the family stated that the siblings were frequently seen together throughout the neighborhood and appeared to have a tight bond. Another homeowner corroborated that the brother and sister would go around together, describing the 11-year-old daughter as “sweet.”
