A Colorado teen busted for DUI allegedly attempted to flee from the deputy and beat her handcuffs against the rear of the deputy’s patrol vehicle.
A deputy responded to a reckless driver, later identified as 18-year-old Brindy Marin Knowles, between U.S. Highway 27 and Lemon Avenue in Fruitland Park around 11:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The caller added that Knowles was driving a white SUV, but she kept falling asleep. She was driving very slowly, her head dipping up and down.
After parking in the highway’s middle, the deputy noticed a white Ford pickup truck traveling southbound with a red passenger car close behind. The deputy started following the truck, pulled in front of the passenger car, and observed the truck’s driving behavior. According to the complaint, it was unable to stay in its lane, swerved from left to center, and nearly collided with the far-right line several times.
The truck was likewise moving much slower than the rest of the traffic, between 15 and 35 mph. The deputy conducted a traffic stop near Lake Ella Road, and the truck proceeded slowly to the right side of the roadway. It came to a stop after turning into Lake Ella Road, according to the report.
When asked for her driver’s license, Knowles said she didn’t have one and asked if she may put her clothing on. The deputy realized she didn’t have any trousers and reached down to slide on her cut-off shorts. He requested for her license again, and the woman responded she didn’t have one, but it didn’t matter because “no one carries their license anyway,” according to the report.
Knowles also turned up the truck’s title, stating that she had it for a week or so. She denied drinking that night, but when asked if she was sleepy, she responded, “What does it matter?” According to the complaint, she complied with getting out of the truck but had to cling on to avoid falling.
When the deputy expressed concern about her being under the influence, Knowles nearly fell over while attempting to get back into her truck. The deputy then grabbed her to keep her from running and handcuffed her. According to the report, he smelled alcohol on her breath at the moment.
She elevated her feet and brought the handcuffs to the front of her person while sitting in the rear of a patrol vehicle. She started to pound on the window, attempting to damage it. The deputy had to recuff her behind her back and tell her that if she continued, she would face more charges, according to the report.
Knowles was on her way to jail when she slipped her shackles to the front and proceeded to pound on the glass window again. The deputy had to pause and tighten the shackles. However, she continued to remove the seat belts and throw them into the car. He had to warn her several times to stop banging her hands against the glass divider, according to the report.
She struggled to stand at the Lake County Jail. She got hostile, thrusting her arms at the deputy and jail officials and refusing to follow commands. She also refused to take field sobriety tests or submit a breath sample, according to the report.
Knowles was charged with DUI, resisting arrest without violence, and attempting to flee. She was released from jail after paying a $2,000 bond.
