Kalvin White and three juvenile accomplices robbed a man at gunpoint in Boystown before making it much easier for officers to apprehend them by ditching their stolen getaway car in the nearby police station parking lot.
When an officer discovered the Hyundai near the entrance to the parking lot of the Town Hall (19th) District station, it was still running with all four doors open. Police analyzed security footage, publicized descriptions of the suspects, and apprehended all four within minutes.
On Wednesday, after White pled guilty to armed robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle, Judge Anjana Hansen sentenced him to 11 years in prison.
Just before 5 a.m. on April 11, 2024, White and three minors, a 13-year-old boy and two 16-year-old boys, arrived in the neighborhood in a Hyundai that had just been stolen from the 1000 block of West Buena, prosecutors said. The steering column had been peeled.
As the group approached the 900 block of West Waveland, they allegedly jumped out of the Hyundai and robbed a 37-year-old man. Prosecutors claimed they searched the man’s pockets, held him at gunpoint, and hit him in the back of the head with the firearm.
The four then returned to the stolen Hyundai and drove off. But they didn’t go very far.
The group abandoned the car at the parking area behind the Town Hall District station, located at 850 West Addison. Officers at the station studied security footage and radioed descriptions of the four people who escaped the Hyundai to patrol units.
Officers nabbed all four and found a handgun on one of the teenagers at the Addison Red Line stop. Prosecutors claimed investigators discovered the robbery victim’s keys, iPhone, AirPods, and an ATM receipt from her account in White’s jacket pocket. White also owned a flathead screwdriver and a pocket knife. Police concluded that the tools could have been used to steal the Hyundai that the group abandoned behind the police station.
Three weeks before the crime, White was arrested by CPD in connection with another stolen Hyundai case. According to CPD records, police observed White exiting a stolen Hyundai Sonata in the 900 block of West 86th Street. The automobile was stolen from a woman who lives on the 3900 block of North Janssen in Lakeview.
White was charged with minor criminal trespassing on a car and released from the police station.
Three weeks later, authorities claimed, White was back in another stolen Hyundai, this time with three kids and a handgun. The outcomes of the kids’ cases are unavailable because their court documents are not open to public access.
