SOLON, Iowa (KCRG/Gray News) – A teacher and a 10-year-old student lost their lives following an elementary school field trip to a lake, according to authorities in Iowa.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to Lake Macbride State Park at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday.
They recovered the body of an adult teacher, identified as 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen of Tiffin, from Lake Macbride at 12:43 p.m.
The child’s body was located on Wednesday. The fifth-grade Borlaug Elementary School student was identified as Ahmed Osman of Iowa City.
Each victim was recovered from the Coralville Reservoir.
The Iowa City Community School District confirmed that fifth graders from Borlaug Elementary were on a School of the Wild field trip.
The district issued a statement after both bodies were recovered.
“Hannah Jorgensen, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary, and Ahmed Osman, a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary, lost their lives as a result of the accident.
“Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district. Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, as well as Hannah’s colleagues and students, Ahmed’s classmates and friends, and everyone who knew and cared for them.”
Authorities have not released details regarding the cause of the accident.
