An Indiana jury found a man guilty of killing his girlfriend during an argument and attempting to justify the shooting by claiming he “barely touched the trigger” when police arrived at the scene.
Reginald Brooks, 55, faced a murder charge in connection with the death of 50-year-old Sajdah Abdur-Rabb, according to Allen Superior Court records reviewed by Law&Crime.
The guilty verdict was delivered this week, as reported by regional CBS affiliate WANE.
On Jan. 29, 2025, Brooks allegedly consumed alcohol and threatened to kill Abdur-Rabb and her son. Abdur-Rabb was a mother of nine children, the youngest of whom was 11 years old.
The following day, the victim was present at a mobile home located off Dunkelberg Road in Fort Wayne. An argument between the couple escalated into violence.
Brooks reportedly reached for a firearm, and he stated that both he and Abdur-Rabb struggled to gain control of it. The weapon discharged and struck the victim.
Authorities arrived at the residence and discovered her suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a hospital, where medical personnel pronounced her dead.
Upon Brooks’ detention, he allegedly stated that he “barely touched the trigger” before the gun fired. He was subsequently booked into jail.
A GoFundMe campaign , now deactivated , established for Abdur-Rabb following the shooting indicated that she was also a grandmother to 10 children. Her family expressed that they were “in complete shock.”
“Never would we have thought this would be our reality,” the fundraiser stated, according to local ABC and NBC affiliate WPTA. “Domestic violence has shattered our world.”
Brooks is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 30. He faces a potential prison sentence of 85 years.
