ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A 20-year-old Orangeburg man faces a murder charge after a Friday night shooting killed a 23-year-old man, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said Monday that deputies are investigating the shooting, which occurred Friday, Sept. 25.
Orangeburg County Sheriff’s investigators responded to Charleston Highway and Woodbine Drive shortly after 9 p.m. after receiving reports of a crash alert.
Investigators said gunfire struck a 23-year-old man, causing the crash. He later died from his injuries.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office previously identified the victim as Cortez Davis of Ellis Avenue in Orangeburg. Davis was taken to MUSC Health Orangeburg, where he died.
Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle said an autopsy was being conducted Monday, Sept. 28.
Following the investigation, authorities arrested and arraigned 20-year-old JaShawn Marque Demond Johnson of Orangeburg in connection with the incident.
Johnson faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
