A high school senior was shot and killed on his way to school Friday morning in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood.
Chicago police said they were summoned to the 400 block of West 61st Street shortly before 8 a.m. and discovered an 18-year-old boy with multiple gunshot wounds on his body. He was brought to the University of Chicago Medical Center and pronounced dead.
Family members identified the victim as Aubrey Jackson, also known as AJ, a senior at Perspectives Leadership Academy. They say he was shot in the neck and eye after leaving his house on Friday morning.
Jackson’s mother and brother called 911 for assistance.
L’Tanya Simmons, a victim advocate for the community group Integrity & Fidelity, stated that they were present at the scene to support the teen’s family immediately following the shooting. If they require financing, we try to assist with burial arrangements, mental health services, counseling sessions, and anything else we can do to help the family return to where they were prior to the sad tragedy,” she stated.
His cousin told CBS News Chicago that he was charming and friendly, constantly laughing and smiling. His mentor, Justin Peters, concurred. “He’s always cracking jokes and is a funny kid, so a lot of people liked him because he lifts people’s spirits around him,” Peters explained.
Peters, creator of Chitown Crime Chasers, described himself as a good youngster who did not engage in harmful activities. He was not involved in any gang or street activity. As I previously stated, he was a good child, an athlete, and an avid basketball player. “That was one of his favorite things to do,” Peters added.
Jackson, a 12th-grade student at Perspectives Leadership Academy’s Leadership campus, was slain while on his way to school.
According to the school, “He was a valued and beloved member of our school, and our deepest sympathies are with his family, friends, classmates, and teachers during this unimaginable time.”
Social workers are giving grief counseling and assistance to students and faculty at the school.
Chicago police stated they are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. They did not indicate whether anyone was in custody.
