Police: Woman Hospitalized And Officer Treated After New Orleans Apartment Fire

A woman was taken to the hospital after jumping from a sixth-floor window, and a police officer was treated for smoke inhalation after a fire at a New Orleans senior apartment building on Sunday night (October 4), according to authorities.

According to the New Orleans Department of Public Safety, the incident broke out at Peace Lake Towers, a six-story apartment development located at 9025 Chef Menteur Highway. Crews were dispatched to the area at 7:55 p.m. and arrived within six minutes.

According to the NOFD, firefighters located the woman amid dirt and shrubbery on the ground below the apartment where the fire erupted. New Orleans EMS transported her to a hospital for assessment. Her injuries were minor.

A New Orleans police officer who assisted in evacuating residents before firefighters arrived was treated for smoke inhalation and transported for further treatment.

Firefighters limited the fire to the flat where it began. As a precaution, the entire building was evacuated, including numerous people who are disabled or have limited mobility.

By 8:31 p.m., 55 firemen from 20 NOFD units had gotten the fire under control. Investigators blamed the event on a fire that began in an oven.

Smoke and water damage are expected to make the sixth level of the building’s east wing, as well as several floors below, temporarily uninhabitable. The American Red Cross has been called in to assist the displaced citizens. The number of displaced people was unknown at the time the fire service issued their report.
