A 14-year-old student was detained on Monday morning for allegedly carrying a knife to Aquilla J. Morgan High School.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the 14-year-old boy hit another student shortly before 8 a.m. while fighting with several other classmates.
Deputies say the teenager then pulled a knife from his pocket and began following one of the classmates engaged in the altercation. HCSO provided a photo of the knife, which seems to be a small folding pocket knife with a wooden handle and a curved notch at the end of the blade.
The HCSO school resource deputy stopped the boy, confiscated the knife, and arrested him.
The teen faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possessing a weapon on school campus, and battery. “This could have resulted in serious injury, or worse, if our school resource deputy had not acted quickly,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a press statement. “There is no place for weapons on school campuses. Anyone who brings one onto campus or threatens another student with one may face arrest.
It has not been determined whether he is being charged as an adult. There is currently an investigation into the occurrence.
