Sherie Scott, a candidate for the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township school board, was charged with felony domestic assault after being apprehended at her home on October 2.
At 4:15 p.m., officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a Pike Township home, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report.
Scott, 41, was detained after reportedly punching an adult male during an argument, according to a probable cause document. The dude wasn’t arrested. WFYI, I am not naming the individual because he is an accused victim of domestic violence.
On October 3, prosecutors filed two charges against Scott in Marion Superior Court: domestic battery committed in the presence of a child under the age of 16, a Level 6 felony, and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor. Magistrate Peter Haughan determined probable cause the same day.
Scott was released on bond from Marion County Jail following an initial hearing on October 6. A pretrial conference is scheduled for November 4.
Scott is one of four candidates seeking three seats on the Pike Township school board. The remaining candidates are board members who are already in office. All candidates filed as Democrats. Scott is a longtime schoolteacher. She formerly worked at Pike Township schools and served as the Indiana Charter School Board’s director of schools.
Scott is still on the ballot in Marion County’s Pike Township.
A felony conviction disqualifies a person from running for or holding a state or local elected office in Indiana. According to the law, if an elected person is convicted of a felony while serving, they are removed from office.
Early voting is now ongoing. The election is in November. 3.
