A 79-year-old man has been charged with an attack at an assisted care facility in Park Ridge.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has recommended criminal charges against Thomas Jones, including attempted murder, aggravated battery with a lethal weapon, and aggravated battery on a nurse.
According to police, officers rushed to Summit of Uptown Assisted Living, situated at 10 North Summit Avenue, approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday for a report of a stabbing in the facility’s dining room.
When cops arrived, they were told that Jones had reportedly attacked a 73-year-old blind man in a wheelchair with a knife, stabbing him in the abdomen.
Police say a female nurse at the facility saw the incident and physically tackled Jones to stop it.
The 73-year-old man, nurse, and suspect were all taken to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Jones was treated and then released into police custody. He was subsequently taken to the Second Municipal District Cook County Courthouse in Skokie for a detention hearing.
