3 teenagers taken into custody after stolen vehicle crashes in St. Cloud

Three teens were taken into custody in St. Cloud on Oct. 14 following a crash involving a car that was reported stolen earlier that day.

Just before noon, the St. Cloud Police Department reported that the vehicle had been abandoned along Seventh Street Southeast and Oakwood Drive. According to authorities, the vehicle was immobilized after colliding with a curb. The vehicle was reported stolen that morning.

Police say the criminals tampered with the vehicle’s ignition column. Police reported that after interviewing witnesses, they saw several young males rushing from the crash to a neighboring apartment.

Police arrested one St. Cloud kid, aged 15, in connection with the stolen vehicle, as well as two others, a 14-year-old from St. Cloud and a 15-year-old from Minneapolis, on unrelated felony warrants.

There were no casualties reported in the crash. Police expect to recommend further charges in the near future relating to the stolen vehicle.

According to 2025 Department of Public Safety research, motor vehicle thefts decreased 23% between 2024 (13,311 thefts) and 2025 (10,293). The Twin Cities have the greatest rate of motor vehicle theft, accounting for more than 80% of all Minnesota car thefts.

The Automobile Theft Prevention Grant Program, which began in 2024 as a statewide program to reduce voter car thefts, did not award any grants to any St. Cloud police departments. The police departments in Coon Rapids, Maplewood, Duluth, Minnetonka, Edina, Roseville, St. Paul, Fridley, Columbia Heights, and Spring Lake Park, as well as the sheriff’s offices of Ramsey and Hennepin counties, received the awards.
