A Queens, New York, woman has been charged with murder after police found her young daughter unresponsive at home.
Francis Cabello, 32, is being held without bail. Prosecutors say she killed her 5-year-old daughter, Fabiana Cabello Singh. Local ABC affiliate WABC reported that Cabello appeared in court on Friday, two days after she allegedly called 911 and told dispatchers she had killed Fabiana. Police went to her home in the Richmond Hill neighborhood of Queens on Oct. 14 and found Fabiana unresponsive.
WABC reported that Cabello called 911 on Wednesday and told dispatchers, “I killed my daughter.” Officers arrived around 6:30 p.m., and Cabello met them at the front door. She allegedly told them, “She’s upstairs, not breathing.”
Police found Fabiana in a bedroom, bleeding from her nose and mouth. Officers rushed her to Jamaica Hospital in a police car, where she was pronounced dead after arrival. A criminal complaint obtained by WABC states that the medical examiner found “scrapes to her face, as well as petechiae to her eyes, heart and lungs, findings which can be found in cases of asphyxia.” Her exact cause of death was still pending.
Medics took Cabello to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, and police later placed her in custody. Her father, Franklin Cabello, lived in the same home and was there when officers arrived after her 911 call. He told WABC his daughter “has mental problems. On medication.”
Local news outlet Gothamist spoke with Fabiana’s father, 36-year-old Kuldeep Singh. He was estranged from Cabello but stayed in touch with her while they co-parented their daughter. Singh told the outlet that Fabiana’s grandmother told him about her condition, and he rushed to the hospital, where Fabiana died. He said Cabello “cared” for Fabiana “so much” and that he knew of no mental health issues.
Singh has started a GoFundMe page to raise money for his daughter’s funeral.
Cabello pleaded not guilty at her first court appearance and remains in custody. She is due back in court on Oct. 20.
