A man will serve decades in prison after being found guilty of the 2024 killing of a 14-year-old boy in Northwest Indiana.
The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office reported on Thursday that Leonardo Nunez was sentenced to 70 years in jail in connection with Damien Abenante’s gunshot death on March 23, 2024.
According to authorities, the fatal shooting occurred in the 1600 block of LaPorte Avenue in Whiting. Officers arrived and discovered Abenante had been shot in the chest. First responders took the teenager to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A jury convicted Nunez guilty following a trial in Lake Superior Court. Nunez was sentenced to 60 years for murder and ten years for a firearm enhancement.
