A four-year-old child is in critical condition after being shot inside a vehicle outside a neighborhood fast-food restaurant Thursday evening.
According to preliminary accounts, the event occurred in the parking lot of the Burger King restaurant in Bartow. Officers reacted when gunfire erupted inside a parked vehicle, injuring the youngster and suffering life-threatening injuries.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has stepped in to assist the Bartow Police Department with the ongoing investigation as detectives try to determine the circumstances behind the weapon’s discharge.
Authorities have yet to release the names of those involved or confirm whether anyone has been arrested.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd will hold a media briefing at 9:30 p.m.
