Miami-Dade Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating after a man was discovered dead in northwest Miami-Dade on Friday morning, authorities said.
The man’s body was discovered in a lot behind Peaceful Zion Missionary Baptist Church when a landscaping team working nearby smelled a strong stink.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the area of Northwest 24th Avenue and Northwest 68th Street soon before 9 a.m. on a complaint of an ill or injured person.
When deputies arrived, they discovered an adult man had died at the location.
The team reported to CBS News Miami that they smelled what seemed to be a decomposing body before contacting authorities. One worker stated that he wasn’t near the body when he smelled the stink. “I wasn’t even near the body,” the worker explained.
When asked if he could smell it from a distance, the worker responded that he could.
One of the workers went close enough to notice the man’s hands peeking out of a bush.
Homicide detectives were dispatched to investigate the deceased, which the authorities have classed as an unclassified death inquiry.
Crime scene investigators were seen inspecting the lot behind the church on Friday afternoon, while deputies taped off the area.
Authorities haven’t established whether the man died as a consequence of homicide or another cause. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the man’s cause and manner of death.
Authorities have not published the man’s identity or provided any more information regarding his death.
The investigation is underway.
