Tampa man taken into custody after allegedly stabbing person, stealing his car: HCSO

A man in Tampa is facing many charges after reportedly stabbing a man several times and fleeing the scene in the victim’s car. Deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office say the two males knew each other.

According to HCSO deputies, just before 3 p.m. on Oct. 20, they responded to allegations of a stabbing at a home on North Central Avenue, between East 121st and East 120 Ave. When deputies arrived, they discovered the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. The man was sent to a hospital in critical condition. HCSO stated that the victim is in “stable but serious condition.”

Surveillance footage provided by HCSO shows moments of the attack, including two men struggling and one attacking the other.

Detectives analyzed security footage during the investigation and discovered Yoandry Hernandez Penton, 38, “repeatedly stabbing the victim with a knife, striking him in the face, and rummaging through his pockets,” according to HCSO. They further stated that after the incident, Hernandez Penton got into the victim’s car and fled at high speeds.

Detectives identified Hernandez Penton as the suspect after discovering an abandoned car on North Hubert Avenue, between West Hanna Avenue and West Idlewild Avenue, approximately 7 miles from the stabbing event. Deputies added that new security footage showed Hernandez Penton exiting the vehicle and walking away.

According to HCSO, deputies secured a warrant and arrested Hernandez Penton on the evening of October 21 while he was strolling down West Hillsborough Avenue.

Hernandez Penton is now facing many counts, including attempted murder in the first degree with a weapon, grand theft motor vehicle, and cocaine possession, according to HCSO. Deputies stated that the probe is still ongoing.

“This was a brutal and relentless attack that left the victim with life-threatening injuries,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister stated. “Our detectives moved quickly to identify the suspect, secure critical evidence, and take him into custody.”
