US citizen living in Juarez sentenced to prison for selling birth certificate to Mexican citizen

A US citizen living in Ciudad Juarez has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for selling his birth certificate to a Mexican citizen, according to the US Attorney’s Office for New Mexico.

In December 2025, U.S. Border Patrol personnel at the Alamogordo, New Mexico, checkpoint came across a Mexican citizen who falsely claimed to be a US citizen, according to USAONM. The individual allegedly displayed 31-year-old David Ramirez’s US birth certificate.

Officials discovered Ramirez lived in Juarez and held US citizenship. The Mexican citizen admitted that he was unlawfully present in the United States and obtained the birth certificate through an intermediary.

Border Patrol agents discovered Ramirez in February 2026 at El Paso’s Bridge of the Americas Port of Entry. According to USAONM, Ramirez agreed to allowing a Mexican citizen to use his birth certificate in exchange for money.

Ramirez pled guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States. Upon his release from prison, Ramirez will serve three years of supervised release.
