4 Chicago men charged for stealing more than $13,000 from gaming machines at suburban café

Four Chicago men have been charged after reportedly breaking into an Addison café and stole over $13,000 from gaming machines.

The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office reported just after 4:30 a.m. On Thursday, October 29, investigators observed a black Dodge Durango and a white BMW, both reported stolen, heading westbound on Lake Street from Bruce Avenue.

A few minutes later, both vehicles backed into the front parking spots at Maria’s Gaming Café, which is located in the 0-100 block of East Lake Street in Addison. According to authorities, five people broke into the shop with enormous sledgehammers and a crowbar. Four of them were armed.

Once inside, the thieves reportedly destroyed the gambling machines with sledgehammers and grabbed the cash boxes before returning to their stolen vehicles and speeding away.

The BMW went over spike strips as they drove away, causing the three occupants to exit and jump into the Dodge Durango. Officers attempted to stop the Durango near Lake Street and Route 83, but it continued traveling on Route 83 toward North Avenue at speeds above 100 mph, according to authorities.

Prosecutors said officers later successfully punctured the Durango’s tires, causing the eight persons inside to exit and flee northbound across I-290 and into a nearby area around Van Buren and 31st Avenue in Bellwood.

Authorities said three firearms fell out of the Durango when the suspects got out and fled.

After combing the area with K-9 units and drones, authorities apprehended four persons. Officers also searched the Durango, discovering a loaded Glock 22 with one bullet in the chamber, a 16-round magazine, and a gadget attached to the weapon that converts a semi-automatic handgun into a fully automatic weapon.

According to investigators, the truck also included a loaded Glock 17C with one bullet in the chamber and a 31-round magazine, a loaded Zastava AK-style rifle with one round in the chamber, a sledgehammer, a prybar, and a cash box.

Officers also examined the BMW, discovering a handgun in the front passenger seat, another gun in the center rear seat, and a sledgehammer in the back seat area.

According to prosecutors, the total cash seized from the gaming machines was $13,847.

The four people in detention have been named as Keonte Adams (20), Dajuan Johnson (24), Kyronte McCondichie (20), and Daryl Nesbit (19).

All four have been charged with armed assault, unauthorized possession of a weapon (machine gun), burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, criminal damage to property, and aggravated flight and eluding.

A judge ordered their detention pending trial, and they are set to appear in court again on Monday, November 23.
