A woman was sentenced for her ex-boyfriend’s shooting death in Florida.
Regena Daniels, a Putnam County defendant, received a 15-year jail term during a recent hearing.
On August 21, 2023, Palatka police officers responded to a home on E. Oak Hill Drive after receiving reports of gunfire.
Detectives discovered that a verbal disagreement had developed into a physical brawl in the backyard between Daniels, her daughter, and another woman brought to the house by Daniels’ ex-boyfriend.
Daniels’ ex-boyfriend was in the backyard but did not participate in the fight. He pulled Daniels away from the other women, and she went into the house to get a gun before coming outside.
Daniels attempted two bullets at her ex-boyfriend but missed. He then moved around the back of the house in an attempt to escape. Daniels ran around the front of the house, blocking his passage, and fired a third shot, which hit him.
The man died from his injuries at the hospital. Daniels revealed to detectives that she had shot her ex-boyfriend and was detained.
The Palatka Police Department investigated the incident. Assistant State Attorney Alexander Gilewicz and Managing Assistant State Attorney Mark Lewis successfully prosecuted the case on behalf of the State of Florida. In August, she pled no contest to manslaughter with a weapon. The Honorable Alicia Washington heard the case and handed the punishment this month.
