Two people were killed and two others injured in a shooting at a California state beach, authorities said.
Authorities arrived at Moss Landing State Beach in Moss Landing soon before 2 a.m. local time Monday for reports of shots fired, officials said.
According to Comd. Andrew Rosas of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, two people were found dead at the location, both with apparent gunshot wounds.
Rosas stated that a third person was transferred from the scene to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A fourth individual came to a local hospital with gunshot wounds; their present condition is unknown, he said.
Detectives are still investigating the site on Jetty Road to ascertain what happened, Rosas added. He stated that the identities of the two deceased individuals are yet unknown. We have no information about whether these people knew each other.
“We have no details,” Rosas stated during a press briefing on Monday. “This is an active scene, and they are in the process of trying to determine exactly what happened.”
Rosas stated that it will take a “lengthy investigation” to determine what transpired.
The beach closes at sunset, so “these people were here after hours,” Chief Park Ranger Mike Dippel of California State Parks explained during the briefing.
The sheriff’s office has blocked Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach until further notice following the incident. There is currently no active threat to the Moss Landing Community, according to a news statement from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
