Following claims by Arizona authorities that an assault on a woman at her home was not a random act of violence but rather a coordinated attack allegedly planned by her own fiancé, the woman has publicly stepped forward to defend him.
Zarian Dyer, the fiancé in question, faces a serious array of charges, including aggravated assault, kidnapping, sexual abuse, attempted sexual assault, and conspiracy, as announced by the Buckeye Police Department on October 29. The 23-year-old was taken into custody at his place of employment and made his second court appearance on Wednesday.
Adrian Ayala, 20, the individual accused of carrying out the physical attack, has been charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, sexual abuse, and attempted sexual assault, according to Maricopa County court records.
On October 16, the woman reported that she was at her Buckeye, Arizona, residence with her two young children. She told local news outlet Arizona’s Family that she had been getting ready to take her children trunk-or-treating while her fiancé had stepped out to visit a nearby store. She recounted hearing her front door alarm go off and initially assumed he had returned , only to discover that was not the case.
Instead, according to police, an unknown man entered her home and launched an attack against her. She managed to fight off the intruder, identified by authorities as Ayala, in an encounter that was recorded on camera.
“What the f, is wrong with you?” she demanded of the man as she pushed him outside and attempted to maintain distance between them, as seen in footage obtained by regional NBC affiliate KPNX. She struck him before the suspect made a deeply unsettling claim.
“Your boyfriend sent me,” he allegedly stated on two separate occasions, leaving her visibly stunned. “He told me he was into this … you were into this,” the man reportedly continued, while also claiming to be under the influence of drugs.
“Right, right,” she replied, pressing him for her partner’s name.
“I don’t know. He sent me a picture,” Ayala allegedly responded, later adding, “It was on Reddit.”
According to police, Ayala not only attacked the woman but also kicked her 17-month-old daughter during the incident. Dyer can be seen in the footage arriving back at the home and rushing toward his fiancée.
Authorities state that Ayala fled the scene before officers arrived. However, the following day, he was located at his residence in Goodyear, Arizona, and placed under arrest.
Goodyear is situated approximately 15 miles east of Buckeye, with both cities serving as suburban communities within the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.
“At the time of the arrest, Ayala claimed he went to the victim’s home after meeting her fiancé online and entering into an agreement with him to sexually assault the victim,” police stated. Investigators subsequently seized Ayala’s electronic devices as well as a phone belonging to Dyer.
Authorities indicated that data extracted from these devices revealed “evidence that Ayala and Dyer were communicating about the planned assault,” although no clear motive has yet been established.
Despite these allegations, the woman stood firmly by her fiancé during Wednesday’s court proceedings.
“My partner was forced to deal with false accusations fabricated by the defendant during his frantic attempt to make excuses,” she stated, according to Arizona’s Family.
Prosecutors, however, contend that Dyer provided Ayala with the home’s location and deliberately went to the store in order to be absent during the attack.
Dyer is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Friday, while Ayala has a pretrial conference set for December 22.
