A Texas mother has been taken into custody after neighbors contacted law enforcement to report that her children were allegedly roaming the street without any adult supervision.
Amber Flemming, 33, was charged with six counts of child abandonment or endangerment on Monday, following reports that her six children had been playing unsupervised in the roadway. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by local CBS affiliate KWTX, a neighbor in Bellmead, Texas, contacted police after witnessing four children in the street, “including a baby who reportedly ran in front of traffic.”
Upon arriving at the scene at 4:23 p.m., officers reported observing “multiple children running across the roadway” with no adults present, including one described as “a toddler wearing only a visibly soiled and sagging diaper.”
According to reporting on the affidavit by local Fox affiliate KWKT, Flemming was identified as the biological mother of three of the children and the stepmother to the remaining three. All of the children were under the age of 15 and were entirely without adult supervision at the time. Authorities noted that the father of three of the children was at work when the incident occurred.
When officers located Flemming, she was found at a neighboring residence, which allegedly carried the distinct odor of marijuana and cigarette products.
Flemming was subsequently booked into the McLennan County Jail and held on a $12,000 bond. As of Thursday morning, she did not appear on the facility’s online inmate roster, and her next scheduled court date had not been made publicly available.
