Following a terrible incident in Harlem, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., announced Justin Deprospo’s punishment, which will range from 18 to life in prison for the murder of Burnie Pleasant. The event occurred in November 2023, when Pleasant was fatally shot outside a smoking shop. According to a recent statement from the District Attorney, Deprospo admitted to second-degree murder on October 8 before being sentenced.

According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, “Justin Deprospo callously and fatally shot Burnie Pleasant, a father of two with musical aspirations.” Bragg stated, “My Office will continue to hold accountable anyone who uses guns to harm New Yorkers – nobody should have to experience the pain experienced by Mr. Pleasant’s loved ones.” These measures represent the continuous campaign against gun violence in New York.

The fatal shooting occurred on West 116th Street and 8th Avenue in a smoking store. Pleasant was shot eight times in the torso and pronounced dead at the hospital. Deprospo fled the site of the crime and was captured nearly two weeks later.

Shilpa Kalra and Brielle Oshinsky, Assistant District Attorneys, handled the prosecution under the supervision of Assistant D.A. Erin Tierney, Chief of Trial Bureau 30, and Executive D.A. Lisa DelPizzo, Chief of the Trial Division. According to a statement from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, D.A. Bragg commended several NYPD officers, including Police Officer Christopher Brown of the 28th Precinct Detective Squad and Detective Carlos Pagan of Manhattan Homicide North, for their work that led to the sentencing.
