An Indiana man is behind bars after authorities said he showed up at his former girlfriend’s residence and assaulted her new partner with the stated goal of killing him.
Steven Shannon, 47, faces an attempted murder charge stemming from a Sunday incident at his ex-girlfriend’s Fort Wayne, Indiana, home.
Local CBS affiliate WANE reported that officers were dispatched to the woman’s house around 9:30 p.m. and discovered a man who had been physically attacked. Multiple witnesses identified Shannon as the alleged assailant, and his ex-girlfriend informed police that Shannon had allegedly sent her a series of threatening texts declaring he was going to “battle” her new boyfriend.
Court records reviewed by WANE show that Shannon allegedly texted his ex-girlfriend, “if he’s still there that means he’s prepared to do battle,” and added that the so-called “battle” would be “to the death.”
Shannon allegedly went further in his messages to the woman, writing that “if he’s not willing to die for you and kill for you, he might want to [leave].”
Police said the woman recounted being in her garage with several friends, including her new boyfriend, when Shannon arrived uninvited and allegedly “ripped the door from the hinges” to force his way in. A witness told officers that Shannon said “I told you I’mma kill you,” allegedly directing the words at the boyfriend after breaking through the door.
Once inside, Shannon allegedly hit the new boyfriend “a few times” as the woman tried to stop the assault. Court documents indicate Shannon held the woman responsible for the alleged attack he was carrying out.
The victim told police that Shannon “came in and attempted to stab the [expletive] out of me,” though he declined to elaborate further. He was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries, including lacerations and stab wounds.
When officers located Shannon, he insisted that he had only gone to his ex-girlfriend’s house to check on her drug use. He told police he came in through the back door, the same way he had when he previously lived there. Shannon also alleged that he was the one who was beaten during the altercation and claimed the victim was the one holding a knife. According to court documents, Shannon told police that he and the other man were “tussling” before he supposedly “blacked out” and departed the residence.
The woman told police Shannon left her home when he heard sirens approaching.
Shannon was booked into the Allen County Jail, where he is being held on $120,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 31.
