Villager Sentenced To 18 Years After Wife Survives Near-fatal Stabbing

A villager has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for nearly killing his wife.

George Hachey, 75, has started serving his sentence with the Florida Department of Corrections. He is not scheduled for release until 2040.

Hachey pleaded no contest this past month in Sumter County Court to a charge of attempted first degree murder. He was given credit for 1,173 days already served in jail.

On September 28, 2022, Hachey’s wife called 911 after being stabbed in the legs, abdomen, and chest at her and her husband’s home in the Village of De La Vista North. A few days ago, she filed for divorce.

“Don’t let me die,” she begged Sumter County sheriff’s deputies, who knocked open a bedroom door and discovered her on the floor. When no one answered the doorbell, deputies broke down the sliding glass door and entered the house.

The wife gave deputies “a dying declaration,” indicating that her husband had stabbed her.

She claimed Hachey told her, “You’ve ruined my life, and now I’m going to end yours.” She was wearing underpants and a yellow top when she was stabbed in the restroom. She crawled to a bedroom and called for help.

Deputies discovered Hachey in a recliner in the living room. He had made “deep cuts” on his wrists and across his throat with the same pocket knife he had used to murder his wife. A paramedic who assisted in transporting Hachey to Ocala Regional Medical Center told deputies that Hachey told him, “I just tried to kill my wife. ” I do not want aid; I want to die.”

Hachey’s wife survived the attack and was ultimately granted a divorce.
