An 84-year-old man was detained Friday after striking someone in a wheelchair with his vehicle in Hialeah and fleeing the scene, leaving the victim to die, according to investigators.
According to an arrest report from the Hialeah Police Department, the hit-and-run occurred around 10:45 a.m. Friday near Palm Avenue and West 49th Street.
According to police, Antonio Hernandez, a Hialeah resident, was driving his gold Honda Pilot SUV south in the outside lane of Palm Avenue when the victim entered the lane and was struck by Hernandez’s car.
According to the report, Hernandez continued driving, dragging the victim and wheelchair underneath the SUV.
Hernandez allegedly drove over the victim before fleeing the scene.
According to the report, a witness contacted 911, and when first responders came, they discovered the man motionless but breathing in the highway.
Police reported that the victim had sustained a head injury.
The victim was eventually sent to Hialeah Hospital, where he or she died soon after arrival.
Police say they found Hernandez at his home the same day. His car was discovered outside the house, with blood on the front bumper and a pair of glasses hooked to its hood.
Hernandez gave a statement to detectives, but it was redacted from the publicly available report.
Hernandez was detained on a charge of fleeing the scene of a fatal crash.
Hernandez remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Monday morning, without bond.
