Deputies detained a 37-year-old man for dumping trash in a deserted area of Far East El Paso County after his truck got stuck while driving away from the area.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, James Sheets was detained on Friday near the Snohomish Loop, near Red Sands, when deputies observed him attempting to free his pickup truck from the sand.
Deputies said they saw a massive pile of broken branches, rocks, bricks, and dirt on the ground behind the trailer his truck was towing.
Following an investigation, deputies suspected Sheets of dumping the rubble, which was reportedly over 1,000 cubic feet, in the desert, but his truck became stuck before he could escape.
According to jail records, Sheets was charged with illegal dumping and held on a $3,000 bond.
According to jail records, Sheets was freed on Saturday after posting a surety bond.
