A Leesburg man who was forcibly stopped by law was charged with possessing fentanyl and ammo found in his vehicle.
An officer attempted to stop 53-year-old Altwain Dale Hamilton in a purple Dodge Charger for a headlight violation at 12:30 a.m. on Friday, according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department. He eventually fled the stop but was apprehended ten minutes later near County Road 466A and Micro Racetrack Road.
Officers observed that the vehicle’s front side windows were tinted deeper than the legal limit and attempted to stop it again. The vehicle paused at first but then began to flee eastbound on County Road 466a. Tire deflation devices were placed near the intersections with Village Park Drive and Cutoff Road, both of which impacted the vehicle’s tires, according to the report.
Law officers looked for the vehicle until it was located driving southbound on County Road 468 with deflated tires. It slowed from 35 mph to a complete stop near the Griffin Road intersection, where Hamilton opened the door and was apprehended by a K-9 unit, the report stated.
The K-9 also detected the stench of narcotics, prompting a search of the vehicle. Officers discovered a clear baggie containing eight smaller fentanyl baggies on the floorboard, as well as two digital scales and a box of. 380 ammo, according to the report.
A further investigation into Hamilton’s criminal background showed four previous felony convictions, according to the report.
Hamilton was detained on counts of fleeing a law enforcement officer with lights and sirens on, possessing fentanyl with intent to sell, being a felon in possession of ammunition, and possessing narcotics paraphernalia. He was taken to Lake County Jail, and bond was set at $78,500.
